High Cholesterol in Seniors: Not Just the Good and the Bad

High cholesterol is not something we come down with, like the cold or the flu. Nor is it merely part of the food we eat. Rather, it’s a condition that arises from the complex interaction between how we eat and live and how our bodies react to those choices.

How Cholesterol Works and What Those Numbers Mean

Only one quarter of blood cholesterol is actually ingested as dietary cholesterol, like the cholesterol in eggs or in shrimp. The other three quarters of cholesterol is produced in the liver and, once linked with carrier proteins known as lipoproteins, flows throughout the body in the bloodstream along with dietary cholesterol. Too much cholesterol, however, has a tendency to build up in the arteries as plaque, slowing or blocking blood flow. The buildup of plaque can occur throughout the body’s arteries, but it’s most evident when it occurs in the coronary arteries, not allowing enough blood to get to the heart. This can lead to heart disease, the greatest long-term risk of high cholesterol.

Might I suggest 2 articles on the myths surrounding cholesterol?  A decade ago, when my Mom was 74, she was put on statins for cholesterol.  Her doctor didn't recognize the common side effects she exhibited.  The result was permanent muscle damage, inability to walk more than a half hour at a time, general decrease in quality of life.

My research led me to a doctor at UCSD heading research on statins.  She stated that there was NO evidence that using cholesterol lowering drugs increased life span in women - in fact the opposite seemed to be true.  Also, a decade ago, the reports of memory loss were often discounted.  Now memory loss is the second most common side effect of statins. Her research is included in the articles below.

Cholesterol appears to have little relationship with heart disease but drugs to lower levels are billion dollar profit centers for drug companies.

Before propaganizing elders - do your research.
