I ran across this CNN article." Caring for mum and dad from afar"
    http://edition.cnn.com/2008/HEALTH/family/01/31/ep.long.distance.care/index.html
It presents very well the challenges, family members face when trying to help an elderly relative from a long distance.
I also found these links to commercial products that address these challenges

Due to busy schedule, in my job life, I am really being unable to give the very mych time to them, as much as I should give. Being the only daughter in my familyu, they even have any other child who can take care of them. And being a nulcear familty, no oher member lives with us. A big house and we three. The entire day they have to be alone in the house. I understand it is really tough for them. Last time, both of them fall ill, and I didnot get any leave from office. I put a nurse for their care, but she often used to take leaves, showing various stupid excuses. So, my problem remain unsolved. Finally, a month ago, my problem solved with the advent of Cladacare Providers. They provide elderly care, and they are based on Kilkenny. Seriously their carer professional were extremely qualified and very professional. My parents were really very happy, and were well very soon. It was really nice to have Cladacare Providers.
