    The Joys of Feeling 'At-Home'

My dad's mother has dementia and is currently in a residential care home.  We've been very happy with the way in which she has adopted her surroundings as her new home.  The family setting, the care givers and other residents are on a 'scale' that she can handle (there are only a few so can often remember and recognize them, vs larger numbers of people in a bigger facility.)

We knew she was adapting well to her new home when one afternoon she was in the kitchen, openned a drawer, looked in and declared "I've got to get rid of all these things.  I never use them!"

We all had a good laugh about that.  She was thinking she was still at home...in her own home, and was concerned about re-organizing 'her' silverware.  She was always very organized and it made us very happy to know that she feels like she's still at home.

Question: My family is trying to determine if a live in is an option for our parents. My mother has dementia, and at the moment we have 3 caregivers doing shifts, but the cost is too great.  What kind of additional coverage would be needed?

Experimental new Alzheimer's Treatment Could Recover Memory

The memories of Alzheimer's patients are forgotten but not gone, to twist a popular phrase. Now, one potential new treatment might help to recover some of those lost memories. An experimental drug has the potential to recover memory and improve cognitive function if taken early in Alzheimer's development-especially when coupled with other treatments, researchers say.

    Living with Alzheimer's: A Sister's Tale

Sisters Ethel P. and Matty B. have been the closest of friends for over eighty years. So no one was surprised when, four years ago, they decided to move together from New York City into an independent living community in Westchester County, New York. They quickly made friends with two other new arrivals, and the foursome began enjoying dinner together virtually every night. Recently, however, Matty has been finding it hard to muster the energy to dress herself, put on makeup, and walk to the dining hall.

"I try to give her a pep talk sometimes," Ethel says, "but she's my older sister so she doesn't really listen to me, and the last thing I want to be is a nag."

Matty's apathy is just one symptom of mild or A1 stage Alzheimer's disease. Her other symptoms, including limited concentration and impaired planning, are also typical in someone living with Alzheimer's.
