    Types of DNR?

    Evidently there are different types of DNR (Do Not Resuscitate orders).  What are they? Are these universal or do they vary by state?  By hospital?

    Can't speak to various states, but in NC a DNR is considered a legal contract between a doctor and patient.  Only the original document (generally a flourescent yellow/orange paper) is accepted by EMS or Emergency Room personnel.  The DNR covers cardiac and/or pulmonary resuciatation and can either have no expiration date or can specify an expiration date to coincide with a particular health event or procedure.

    I'm lucky to live in a state that participates in the POLST program. That stands for "Physician's Orders for Life Sustaining Treatment". Check it out at POLST.ORG to see if your state or area is involved.
