New CDC Guides Address Older Adult Fall Prevention

Unintentional falls are the leading cause of injury resulting in death for older adults (age 65+), according to data from the National Center for Health Statistics. In 2005, a total of 15,800 persons aged 65+ died as a result of injuries from falls. Every 35 minutes someone age 65 and older dies from a fall, Ileana Arias, director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s National Center for Injury Prevention and Control told journalists attending the annual American Society on Aging/National Council on Aging conference in Washington, D.C. today.
