More than 81 million Americans seniors plan to travel in 2008 and are collectively estimated to spend $126 billion on their next trip, according to the AARP.

Utah-based tour director Doreen Barnes, who leads groups of seniors ranging in age from 55 to over 90, says senior travel is booming, and the travel industry has stepped up to the plate to ensure their special needs are met. "Seniors these days are younger," she says. "When you get to be our age, you don't want things. You have enough stuff around the house." Experiences-meeting people, learning, and exploring-are what they want, Barnes says.

"Some of our people do take oxygen. We always encounter some walkers and occasionally a wheelchair, and we're happy to accommodate anybody on our trips," says Barnes, who is 76. Many of her clients receive some elder assistance from a child or friend.

Doreen you are so right..Seniors have enough items... Many of them save and then feel with a disability they are not able to put the "Sky's the limit" into their life.... I'm a Nurse that has helped seniors and families for many years with relocating, visiting family, traveling and attending those special occasions. Having the ability to know there are services available to have a travel escort for that vacation, visit or attend that special occasion is a plus for any senior traveler or peace of mind for that family member to know someone is there to assist. I have a service that actually helps with relocation of seniors that need to move closer, from another facility, hospital or home, this takes so much stress and frustration off the families.  I also travel with seniors to special occasions or vacation of their choice. For any senior to have the ability to actually be able to make that special memory is "PRICELESS"   I am so glad others have the passion....    : )

Who says you can't travel and see other places once you're old?! You shouldn't stop living and discovering things. This senior travel is such a great idea to keep the elderly mobile, to cheer them up and make them see the beauty in life. The great thing about this is that it accepts everyone, those from nursing homes, those in wheelchairs, using walkers and in need of oxygen. Keep up the good work so that more seniors will find their retirement years fun.

It's good that such travel options are available for seniors. Some of the seniors are usually discouraged to go out and explore considering they have to bring a durable medical equipment such as wheelchairs and oxygen tanks during travel. It's really nice that senior travel companies are able to customize tours that are sensitive to the needs of the elders

Elderly people does deserves much care, but the fact comes that they should be cared with as much as love and affection you can provide them. However, sometimes it is irritating, but then they should also have the chance to enjoy their life which we could do so, and a journey to a visiting site could be a part of that entertainment.

I agree with you, This mature journey is such a smart idea, to brighten them up and make them see the elegance in life.
