    Assisted Living Cost Increases

My mother is in assisted living for dementia. After the first year, they jacked up the rate by $600.00 per month. The claim was that the care services increased. Here are the reasons: #1 She is becoming combative (only occasionally), which is an intangible. #2 She now receives 2 baths a week instead of one. On top of this, she is on the border of being pushed to the next care level which will be an additional +$600. per month. They are breaking my Dad, who is still alive and on a fixed income. And she has only been there a year. Her behavior has not changed all that much. Has anyone had similar experiences? If so, how did you handle it? Can you fight the charges? Any help appreicated.

Try to talk to the head of the facility. Make sure that they provide only what your mom needs. You can also think of moving her to another facility

It appears that this assisted living is making your Dad a cash cow which isn't right. This could have been easily avoided if you have paperworks showing that you and the facility reached an agreement with the cost of care. But since it has been taking advantage of you better look for another which is more competent and really care about their patients. Don't patronize this kind of facility since it's asking for a huge payment but sad to say it can't provide quality services. Shame on the owner of this facility.
