Study: Survival short after dementia diagnosis

Once diagnosed with dementia, the average length of survival is four-and-a-half years, according to a new report out of Britain. The study followed some 13,000 British citizens over the age of 65 over the course of 14 years.Researchers found that those expected to live the longest after diagnosis are women between the ages of 65 and 69 with no pre-existing disabilities. Some 81% of the 438 patients who developed dementia died during the study period. Among the factors researchers studied were age, sex and pre-existing disability.Study authors say that providers, policymakers and others should benefit from such research.

Why would this be I wonder?  If they receive appropriate care it would seem that dementia (as opposed to Alzheimer's) isn't neccessarily progressive.

Good morning JohnT. Well after reading this news of research I feel blessed because my Mother is over 75 and she's been diagnosed with this disease, but she is in the middle stages which we, her family, recognized the symptoms 5 years before her diagnosis of dementia. She also has a brother who has been living with Alzheimer's for over 15 years now in a facility for this type of care and he's 81.

May you gather up the colors of your life and weave them into rainbows for your heart and may your eyes continue to see the beauty of your life and your soul dance to the music of each day.

    Hi Rainbow Painter,

My Dad's mother has a dementia diagnosis.  We've known about it for about 3 years and 6 months ago moved her into assisted living.  It's a disturbing study that I'm hoping someone else will prove wrong.  In the meantime we're just happy for every day we get.

     Best,

Sounds like there is an agenda behind the research. Not one that caregivers and loved ones agree with or share, either. I dont see the benefit towards the valuable elderly people with such diagnosis, which should have been the point of any such research study. I see bogus "research studies" all the time in the special education field that come to alarming and dangerous conclusions.
